CAL STATE EAST BAY CONCLUDES 2008 CAMPAIGN WITH 10-8-1 RECORD
The Pioneer women's soccer team finished the 2008 season with a record of 10-8-1. Cal State East Bay won four of its last five matches. The Pioneers scored 30 goals in 19 matches. Christina Quitasol led the Pioneers in scoring with eight goals and two assists. Michelle Quintero and Ariana Nobrega each scored five goals this season. Freshman Breanna Baker scored three goals. Goalkeeper Koree Palmer allowed 1.40 goals a match with 76 saves and four shutouts. The Pioneers concluded the 2008 season with a 2-1 overtime defeat to U.C. Santa Cruz on November 7. Christina Quitasol accounted for the Pioneers lone goal in the first half. Cal State East Bay defeated Academy of Art University 3-0 on OCtober 31 and 3-2 in overtime on November 2. Michelle Quintero, Ariana Nobrega, and Athena Bell recorded her first goal of the season in the Pioneers 3-0 victory. Michelle Garcia, Christina Quitasol,and Ariana Nobrega scored the game winner in overtime as the Pioneers were victorious 3-2. The Pioneers recorded a pair of home victories over Chapman University (2-1) and La Sierra University (2-0). In the victory over Chapman, the Pioneers scored first as Ariana Nobrega scored her third goal of the season. Breanna Baker scored the decisive goal for the Pioneers at the 79:36 mark. Goalkeeper Koree Palmer turned away five shots including a potential match tying goal late in the second half. Christina Quitasol scored two goals and goalkeeper Koree Palmer recorded her third shutout of the season as the Pioneers defeated La Sierra University 2-0.on October 20. Cal State East Bay was defeated by U.C. Santa Cruz 2-1 on October 3, Holy Names University 1-0 on October 8 and CSU-San Marcos 3-0 on October 11. The Pioneers lost to Chapman University 3-2 and tied Cal Lutheran 0-0 over the weekend. Ariana Nobrega and Michelle Quintero each scored a goal against Chapman. Cal State East Bay split a pair of Cal Pac Conference matches last week. On September 16, Cal State East Bay lost to Menlo College 2-1. Christina Quitasol, with an assist from Carissa Martin, scored the Pioneers lone goal. Quitasol scored a pair of goals as the Pioneers defeated William Jessup University 3-1 on September 19. Michelle Garcia contributed to the Pioneers victory with her first goal of the season. The Pioneers won two out of three matches. On September 12, the Pioneers defeated visiting Willamette University 3-1. Britanie Strei scored a pair of goals while Michelle Quintero added another score for the Pioneers. Cal State East Bay blanked Cascade College 2-0 Christina Quitasol and Samantha Salfen each scored a goal for the Pioneers. Goalkeeper Koree Palmer turned away two shots to record her second shutout of the season. Cal State East Bay lost to Menlo College 2-1 on September 16. Christina Quitasol accounted for the Pioneers lone goal. On September 4, the Pioneers lost to NAIA institution Hope International University 3-0. On September 5, the Pioneers defeated Linfield College 2-1 in double overtime. Breanna Baker scored a goal in the first half while Samantha Salfen, with an assist from Michelle Garcia, scored the decisive goal at the 100:16 minute of the second overtime. Cal State East Bay lost to Whitworth University 2-1 on September 7. Carissa Martin scored the Pioneers lone goal at the 17:58 minute of the first half. Pioneer Goalkeeper Koree Palmer turned away 12 shots. Cal State East Bay began the 2008 campaign on a successful note defeating Pacific Lutheran 2-0 on August 29. Michelle Quintero scored a goal at the 20:27 mark while Ariana Nobrega added a score early in the second half. Goalkeepers Aneesa Gonzalez and Koree Palmer combined for the shutout. The Pioneers concluded their Oregon trip on September 1 with a 2-0 win over Pacific University. Michelle Quintero scored on a header assisted by Whitney Craig in the second half. Koree Palmer recorded the shutout. The Pioneers return 11 players from the 2007 team which finished 11-7-1. Goalkeeper Koree Palmer, with 71 saves, six shutouts and a 0.97 goals against average, returns for her senior year. Palmer was named to the Association of Division III All Independent second team last season. The Pioneers also return leading scorer senior Christina Quitasol (16 goals). Quitasol was selected as the Association of Division III All Independent Co-Offensive Player of the Year and first team. Cal State East Bay should receive offensive production from returning seniors Megan Domench (5 goals- 4 assists) and Samantha Salfen (2 goals - 2 assists) along with sophomore Michelle Garcia (1 goal -1 assist). Cal State East Bay looks solid on defense led by seniors Melanie Cropper and Whitney Craig along with junior Carissa Martin.
PIONEERS CONCLUDE 2007 SEASON WITH 11-7-1 RECORD/FOUR PIONEERS NAMED TO ALL INDEPENDENT TEAM
The Pioneer women's soccer team completed the 2007 season with an 11-7-1 record. Cal State East Bay concluded the regular season with a defeat to U.C. Santa Cruz on November 3. The Pioneers lost to San Francisco State 1-0 on October 28. Goalkeeper Koree Palmer turned away four shots and had a shot on goal. Cal State East Bay recorded a pair of home shutouts over Emory-Riddle 1-0 on October 19 and Westminster College 3-0 on October 21. Megan Domench scored at the 64:15 minute mark to account for the Pioneers lone goal against Embry-Riddle. Jeanne Garcia, Christina Quitasol, and Jackie Cruz all scored for the Pioneers. Koree Palmer turned away two shots to record her sixth shutout of the season. The Pioneers blanked visiting Ripon College 8-0 on October 15. Sarah Abfalter and Christina Quitasol each scored twice in the Pioneer victory. The Pioneers lost to U.C. Santa Cruz 1-0 in overtime on October 13. Quitasol recorded a hat trick in a 5-1 victory over William Jessup on October 3. Amanda Tweedy and Megan Domench accounted for the Pioneers two other scores. Quitasol and Tweedy each scored a goal as Cal State East Bay shutout Chapman University 2-0 on October 5. Koree Palmer turned away three shots to record the shutout. On October 7, Cal State East Bay lost to La Sierra University 1-0. Quitasol scored a pair of goals including the game winner in the second overtime as Cal State East Bay defeated Dominican University on September 29. On September 26, the Pioneers defeated Simpson University 2-1 in overtime. Christina Quitasol scored both Pioneer goals including the game winner in the first overtime period. Cal State East Bay lost a tough decision to visiting Chapman University 3-2 on September 23. The Pioneers outshot Chapman 21-14. Christina Quitasol accounted for the Pioneers two goals. The Pioneers won their fourth match of the season by defeating Menlo College 1-0 on September 20. Christina Quitasol, with an assist from Britanie Strei, accounted for the Pioneers lone goal. Goalkeeper Koree Palmer recorded four saves to earn the shutout. On September 15, Cal State East Bay lost its home opener to Holy Names 1-0, with the goal coming late in the second half. The Pioneers had twelve shots on goal, but could not get past the Holy Names goalkeeper.
Christina Quitasol led the offense with 16 goals scored. Megan Domench scored five goals. Sarah Abfalter scored three goals. Goaltender Koree Palmer had 71 saves, six shutouts, and a 0.97 goals against average. Four Pioneers were named to the Association of Division III All Independent Team. Quitasol was selected as the Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Jackie Cruz was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. Quitasol and Cruz were also first team picks. Goalkeeper Koree Palmer was a second team selection while defender Amanda Tweedy received honorable mention recognition.
PIONEER WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM TO HOST HOLY NAMES IN HOME OPENER ON SEPTEMBER 15
The Pioneer women's soccer team, with a record of 3-1-1, will host Holy Names University in their home opener on September 15 at 11:00 a.m. The Pioneers shutout Mills College 7-0 on September 13. Samantha Salfen recorded a hat trick while Megan Domench scored a pair of goals for the Pioneers. Cal State East Bay split a pair of matches in Southern California defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-1 on September 7 and losing to Redlands 2-0 on September 9. The Pioneers opened the season with a 1-1 tie against Lewis and Clark and a 1-0 victory over Linfield College.
The women started off the season with a tie against Lewis and Clark on Sept. 1. Junior Christina Quitasol scored the only goal for the Pioneers and Goalie Koree Palmer had seven saves in goal.
The Pioneers next match was against Linfield COllege on Sept. 3. The women won 1-0, with the goal coming from Junior Melanie Cropper, who subbed into the game.
2007 PIONEER WOMEN'S SOCCER PREVIEW
Coming off their best season in 18 years, the Pioneer women's soccer team is anticipating a successful 2007 campaign. Ten players return from the 2006 team which finished with a 12-5-1 record. Junior Koree Palmer, who allowed 1.02 goals a match with six shutouts, will return as the Pioneers starting goalkeeper. Jessica Berry, from Chabot College, will back up Palmer in goal. In the midfield, the Pioneers return seniors Sarah Abfalter and Jeanne Garcia (3 goals-3 assists), junior Samantha Salfen, and sophomore Britanie Strei. Newcomers expected to contribute in the midfield include Megan Domench and Christina Quitasol, both from Delta College, Nicole Fonseca (Holy Names High School) and Lee Anderson (Ripon High School). Sophomores Shannon Pile and Amber Stitt, along with newcomers Sarah Trigg (West Valley College), freshmen Cecy Martinez and Michelle Garcia (Liberty High School) and Tatiana Mendoza (Monte Vista High School-San Diego) will be the forwards this season. Once again, the Pioneers will be strong on defense led by returning defenders Amanda Tweedy and Melanie Cropper. Sophomore Carissa Martin, who played midfield last season, will be switched to defender. Newcomers Whitney Craig (Cal Poly Pomona), Jackie Cruz and Athena Bell (Santa Clara High School) will contribute on defense.
