CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM FINISHES 28TH IN NAIA CHAMPIONSHIPS/ANDREW WELCH NAMED NAIA MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

The Pioneers finished 28th in the NAIA Women's Cross Country Championship at Kenosha, Wisconsin on November 22.Kelly Guerrero led all Pioneer runners placing 109th. Guerrero covered the 5k course in 19:28. Nancy Velazquez finished 145th with a time of 19:50. Kristin Parker placed 163rd in 20:12 while Bernadette Lu was 179th with a time of 20:33. Elliott Nicholson finished in 286th place (28:28.2) while Andrew Welch placed 309th (29:23.2) to lead the Pioneer men's cross country team.

Andrew Welch has been named 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete. The honor is given to a student-athlete who maintained a minimun grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and achieved junior academic status to qualify. Welch, a sociology and criminal justice major, has a 3.548 grade point average.

PIONEER WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM WINS SIXTH CONSECUTIVE CAL PAC CHAMPIONSHIP/MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM TAKES SECOND

For the sixth straight season, the Pioneer women's cross country team captured the Cal Pac Conference team title on November 7. The Pioneers finished with 28 points while Mills College placed second with 87 points in the seven-team field. Freshman Kelly Guerrero won the individual race with a time of 19:02. Nancy Velazquez recorded a time of 19:27 to finish in fourth place. Bernadette Lu followed Velazquez with a fifth place showing of 19:29. Johnna Hotchkiss was timed in 19:49 to finish in eighth place. The Pioneer men's cross country team came up one point short of winning their second straight Cal Pac Conference team title. Cal State East Bay finished with 50 points one behind champion William Jessup. Elliot Nicholson finished second in the race with a time of 28:22. Andrew Welch recorded a time of 30:17 to finish in ninth place. Matt Bogdanawicz placed 11th with a time of 30:34.

PIONEER WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM CAPTURES SANTA CLARA INVITATIONAL OPEN RACE

A solid all-around performance enabled the Pioneer women's cross country to capture the Open Race of the Santa Clara Invitational on October 18. Nancy Velaquez recorded a PR of 19:19 to lead all Pioneer runners. Bernadette Lu followed Velaquez with a PR of 19:23. Kristin Parker also had a PR with a time of 19:24. Kelly Guerrero finished with a time of 19:40 while Johnna Hotchkiss recorded a PR of 19:42. Gabriella Cruz finished at 20:28 while Clarivel Vega recorded a time of 21:32 completing an outstanding performance by the Pioneers.

The Pioneer women's cross country team finished second in the Stanislaus State Invitational on September 6. Kelly Guerrero led all Cal State East Bay runners with a 5th place showing. Guerrero covered the 6K course in 25:42. Johnna Hotchkiss finished right behind Guerrero in 6th place in a time of 25:43. Bernadette Lu recorded a time of 26:01 to place ninth while Nancy Velazquez finished 12th in 26:20. Elliot Nicholson led the Pioneer men's cross team with a 9th place showing. Nicholson covered the 8k course in 30:24. Francisco Pulido (30:56) and Andrew Welch (31:03) finished 11th and 12th respectively.

CAL ST EAST BAY MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM TIES FOR TOP HONORS IN HOLY NAMES INVITATIONAL

The Pioneer men's cross country team tied for top honors in the 6th Annual Holy Names Invitational on October 24. Elliot Nicholson led all Cal St East Bay runners and finished third overall. Nicholson covered the 8k race in 29:17.0. Francisco Pulido and Matt Gogdanowic finished fifth and sixth respectively with times of 30:14 and 30:21. John Erlandson was clocked in 30:44 to finish eighth while Andrew Welch placed ninth with a time of 31:12.

CAL STATE EAST BAY CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS CAPTURE CAL PAC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

A tremendous overall performance enabled the Cal State East Bay women's and men's cross country teams to capture the Cal Pac Conference Championships on October 26. The Pioneer women's cross country team won their fifth consecutive Cal Pac Conference title. Cal State East Bay compiled a winning score of 57 points, 12 better than second place Simpson University. Adilene Sanchez led the Pioneers with a fifth place performance. Sanchez covered the 2.95 mile course in 19:59. Jin-Mee Leal followed in seventh place with a time of 20:13. Yesenia Esparza and Annie Sien finished 13th and 14th respectively. Sanchez, Leal, Esparza, and Sien were all named to the Cal Pac All-Conference team. The Pioneer men's cross country team won their second Cal Pac Conference Championship. Cal State East Bay won the Cal Pac Championship with 31 points, 25 better than second place William Jessup University. Marcos Gomez and Landry Daniels finished third and fourth respectively with times of 28:26 and 29:09. Elliott Nicholson recorded a time of 29:47 to finish sixth while Andrew Welch placed ninth at 30:26. Russ Burkholder was 11th at 30:32 while John Erlandson finished 13th with a time of 30:42. All six Pioneer runners earned Cal Pac All-Conference honors. The Pioneer women's and men's cross country teams will compete in the NAIA West Regionals in Fresno on November 3.

Both Pioneer women's and men's cross country teams had impressive outings in the Nor Cal Athletic Conference Preview Meet at the Crystal Springs Course in San Mateo. The Pioneer women's cross country team finished in a first place with Holy Names. Jin-Mee Leal led all CSUEB runners with a sixth place performance. Leal completed the 2.95 course in 20:36. Adilene Sanchez finished eighth in 20:50 while Yesenia Esparza placed 13th with a time of 22:25. The men's cross country team captured the Cal Pac Preview Meet. Marcos Gomez completed the 8k course in 28:29 to finish in third place. Elliott Nicholson (30:01) and Landry Daniels (30:09) finished fifth and sixth respectively. Both Pioneer cross country teams will compete in the Fresno Pre-Regional on October 20.

The Pioneer men's cross country team placed second in the Mills Invitational on September 22. Landry Daniels led all Cal St East Bay runners with a 10th place finish. Daniels completed the 8K course in 30:00.00. Russ Burkholder finished 16th at 31:46.00 while Bryson Harris placed 21st with a time of 32:47.00. Andrew Welch was timed in 32:59.00 to finish in 24th place.
