The Pioneers, with a Cal Pac record of 3-1 and an overall mark of 5-5, will resume Cal Pac Conference play with a home game against Bethany University on January 8 and a road contest versus Dominican University on January 10. The Pioneers are averaging 77.1 points and 37.4 rebounds a game. Tauran Moore is the Pioneers top scorer averaging 14.5 points per game. Cal State East Bay improved to 3-1 in Cal Pac Conference play with a 102-83 victory over William Jessup University. Tauran Moore led all scorers with 31 points on 11 of 22 from the field. Cal State East Bay opened Cal Pac Conference play with a pair of victories last weekend. On December 12 Cal State East Bay defeated Holy Names University 90-72. Fabien Baker led four Pioneer players in double figures with 21 points on 10 of 14 from the field. Tauran Moore and Pete Johnson followed with 16 and 15 points respectively. Will Freedman scored 12 points on 6 of 8 from the field. As a team, the Pioneers shot 60.7 percent from the field. Cal State East Bay defeated Simpson University 88-55 on December 13. Pete Johnson came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 17 points. Shea Frazee and Fabien Baker each scored 14 points. Jawaan Rubin scored 13 points on 5 of 5 from the field and 3 of 3 from the three point area. The Pioneers out rebounded Simpson University by a 46-26 margin. Baker led the Pioneers on the boards with 10 rebounds.

Cal State East Bay concluded tournament play with a 70-68 overtime loss to Chapman University. Will Freedman led three Pioneer players in double figures with 18 points on 9 of 13 from the field. Cal State East Bay men's basketball team opened the 2008-09 campaign with a split in the Lewis and Clark Tournament on November 21-22. 2008-09 CAL STATE EAST BAY MEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW
The Pioneer men's basketball team will prove a force to be reckoned with during the 2008-09 campaign. Cal State East Bay finished 14-13 and third in the Cal Pac Conference last year. This season, the Pioneers will field a team comprised of quality returning players and newcomers expected to immediately contribute towards a successful campaign. "This is the most balanced and talented 1 through 16 team I've coached,"said Will Biggs, entering his 12th year as head coach of the Pioneers. "We will be very competitive this season." The Pioneers return five players in the backcourt including junior JAWAAN RUBIN (10.0ppg, 5.5rpg) and senior SHEA FRAZEE (9.5ppg,2.8rpg). Rubin will also play forward this year. Frazee averaged 23.8 points in the Pioneers last five contests."Rubin and Frazee have both worked hard during the off-season,"Biggs said. "Both players will contribute in a big way for us." Juniors SCOT KNOX, averaging 8.0 points a game and 28 steals along with JUN UCHIDA, 55 assists and 19 steals, will contribute at the guard position. MELVIN FLEMINGS, who came alive during the 2006-07 Cal Pac Conference post-season tournament, will also see his share of playing time at guard. JAMIL MUCHELL,a transfer from San Francisco State and Bishop O'Dowd standout, will be used at both point and off guard. "Jamil is a very strong and physical player," Biggs said. "He's an excellent ball handler." TAURAN MOORE, a transfer from Cosumnes College, should see a lot of action at the off guard position. "Tauran is very athletic and a definite scoring threat,"Biggs said. "He is an outstanding shooter and solid defender." Transfer FABIEN BAKER, from Cosumnes College, is a versatile player who will be used at guard and center. "Fabien is very athletic and will be an explosive offensive player and strong rebounder,"Biggs said. BRYAN HARVEY, a transfer from Fresno State, will contribute in the backcourt according to coach Biggs. "Bryan is a good scorer and outstanding passer," Biggs said. "He could play point guard." The Pioneers will carry one freshman this year:ANDREW RITCHART, from Forest River High School. "ANDREW is a tough competitor who is learning how to compete, Biggs said. "He is a good shooter." WILL FREEDMAN, who led the Pioneers in scoring with a 13.9 point per game average, rebounding at 7.1 rpg and field goal percentage (59.3%) while being named Cal Pac Conference Newcomer of the Year during the 2006-07 season, will return at forward. Freedman was out all of last season with a torn ACL. "Will has really improved his shot,"Biggs said. "He is a good post player and the intense competition in practice has made him a better player." PETE JOHNSON, from Imperial Valley College, is very fast, a good rebounder and tough inside player, according to coach Biggs. Two newcomers the Pioneers are counting on to contribute in the front court are SAEED GATSON, a physical and tough inside player, along with FRANKIE MCWHIRT, an outstanding shooter from Riverside College. CEDRIC GRIFFIN, who is improving on his post play according to coach Biggs, will help the Pioneers up front. At the center position, the Pioneers return senior FINIS JONES, who averaged 5.4 points and 4.1 rebounds during the 2007-08 season. "We have a lot of weapons on this team,"Biggs said. "On any night, a different lineup can win for us." "Our team will be exciting to watch this year."
CAL STATE EAST BAY MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM CONCLUDES 2007-08 SEASON WITH A WINNING RECORD
Cal State East Bay men's basketball team completed the 2007-08 campaign with a record of 14-13 and a Cal Pac Conference mark of 9-7 (3rd place). The Pioneers went 1-1 in the Cal Pac Conference Post-Season Tournament. Cal State East Bay opened post-season play by defeating Simpson University 100-58. As a team the Pioneers shot .607 percent from the field and had 29 assists. Shea Frazee led four Pioneer players in double figures with 20 points including 6 of 8 three-pointers. Scot Knox and Melvin Flemings both came off the bench to score 16 and 12 points respectively. Jawaan Rubin scored 10 points. The Pioneers lost to eventual tournament champion Menlo College 74-63. Shea Frazee led four Pioneers in double figures with 19 points. Billy Nunes, Jawaan Rubin, Scott Knox each scored 11 points. The Pioneers averaged 73.1 points a game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field. The Pioneers averaged 36.7 rebounds compared to 33 for their opponents. Greg Walker, who was selected to the all-Cal Pac Conference Team, led the Pioneers in scoring with a 10.8 point per game average and rebounds at 5.7rpg. Jawaan Rubin averaged 10 points a game. Scott Knox averaged eight points a game and had 28 steals. Billy Nunes averaged 8.9 points per game and topped the Pioneers with 113 assists and 40 steals. Finis Jones averaged 5.4 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. He shot 54.5 percent from the field. Tim Jones shot 54.9 percent from the field. The Pioneers received good production from Shea Frazee who averaged 9.5 points per game. Frazee averaged 23.8 points in the Pioneers last five contests. The Pioneers won a pair of road Cal Pac Conference games to conclude the regular season. The Pioneers defeated William Jessup University 64-58 on February 14. Shea Frazee led the Pioneers with 23 points while Billy Nunes added 10. Cal State East Bay defeated Pacific Union College 92-82 in overtime on February 16. Greg Walker led the Pioneers with 26 points followed by Shea Frazee with 19. Cal State East Bay recorded a pair of home victories over the weekend. On February 8, the Pioneers defeated U.C. Santa Cruz 69-64. Shea Frazee led all scorers with 22 points on 7 of 12 from the field and 4 of 8 three-pointers. He added seven rebounds. Billy Nunes had nine assists and four steals. On February 9, Cal St East Bay defeated Cal Maritime 87-69. The Pioneers 42-36 at halftime, but outscored Cal Maritime 51-27 in the second half. Santa Cruz 88-59. The Pioneers had four players score in double figures led by Jawaan Rubin with 20 points on 9 of 13 from the field. Frazee followed with 16 points while Emil Kim and Tim Jones scored 11 and 10 respectively. Frazee and Rubin led the Pioneers on the boards with eight rebounds each. The Pioneers captured the Consolation Championship with a 91-88 victory over Southwestern College. Cal State East Bay trailed 39-33 at halftime, but outscored Southwestern College 58-49 in the second half. Cal State East Bay had a balanced scoring attack led by Greg Walker and Tim Jones with 19 and 18 points respectively. Rubin and Knox followed with 17 points each. Knox led the Pioneers on the boards with nine rebounds. Jawaan Rubin was named to the All-Tournament Team.
CAL STATE EAST BAY 2007-08 MEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW
The Pioneers will field a balanced team with three freshmen, four returning sophomores, and 10 junior college transfers for the upcoming season. Last year, the Pioneers carried 12 freshmen and one senior. "We're more experienced and matured than last season," said Pioneer coach Will Biggs. "There's a lot more depth on this team and not much seperation between our one and 10 players." Leading scorer Will Freedman (13.9ppg) along with Billy Nunes (13.7ppg) both return for their sophomore campaigns. Sophomores Jun Uchida and Scott Knox are expected to make key contributions this season. Newcomers 6'7 Greg Walker-Dakota Wesleyan, 6'3 Michael Holmes-Ohlone College, 6'6 Finis Jones-Point Loma College, 6'4 Joshua Cheek-Irvine Valley College, 6'3 Jawaan Rubin-Fresno City College, 6'5 Emil Kim-Linfield College, and 6'5 freshman Cedric Griffin-Los Altos High School are seven new players expected to make an immediate impact during the 2007-08 campaign. "It's time to get back to the post season,"Biggs said. "In order to accomplish this goal, we have to win the Conference."
