Single Subject Credential Program Courses
Leading to a Single Subject Preliminary Credential.


The Department offers two pathways to the Single Subject Credential, Discrete Course (Ryan credential) and Integrated (SB 2042 credential).

Introduction to theory and practice for teaching in single subject classrooms. Focus on environment, development, assessment, professionalism, diversity, technology, and literacy. Prerequisite: admission to Single Subject Credential Program.
TED 5307 Teaching & Learning in the Single Subject Classroom II (7)
Theory and practice for teaching in single subject classrooms. Focus on environment, development, assessment, professionalism, diversity, technology, and literacy. Application in beginning weeks of a teaching assignment. Prerequisite: TED 5306.
TED 5308 Teaching & Learning in the Single Subject Classroom III (7)
Theory and practice for teaching in single subject classrooms. Focus on environment, development, assessment, professionalism, diversity, technology, and literacy. Emphasis on individual differences among students. Prerequisite: TED 5306, TED 5307.
TED 5309 Teaching & Learning in the Single Subject Classroom IV (7)
Synthesis of theory and practice for teaching in single subject classrooms. Focus on environment, development, assessment, professionalism, diversity, technology, and literacy. Emphasis on individual differences among students. Prerequisite: TED 5306, TED 5307, TED 5308.
Instructional Methods
TED 5390 Instructional Methods for the Single Subject Classroom I (3)
Introduction to theory and practice of instructional methodology in a single subject classroom. Separate sections for art, English, foreign languages, mathematics, music, physical education, science, and social studies. Prerequisite: admission to Single Subject Credential Program.
TED 5391 Instructional Methods for the Single Subject Classroom II (2)
Theory and practice of instructional methodology in a single subject classroom. Application in the beginning weeks of a teaching assignment. Separate sections for art, English, foreign languages, mathematics, music, physical education, science, and social studies. Prerequisite: TED 5390.
TED 5392 Instructional Methods for the Single Subject Classroom III (2)
Theory and practice of instructional methodology in a single subject classroom. Emphasis on individual differences among students. Separate sections for art, English, foreign languages, mathematics, music, physical education, science, and social studies. Prerequisite: TED 5390, TED 5391.
TED 5393 Instructional Methods for the Single Subject Classroom IV (2)
Theory and practice of instructional methodology in a single subject classroom. Emphasis on individual differences among students. Separate sections for art, English, foreign languages, mathematics, music, physical education, science, and social studies. Prerequisite: TED 5390, TED 5391, TED 5392.
Field Experience
TED 5381 Field Experience in the Single Subject Classroom A (8 or 10)
Initial Single Subject field experience. Student teacher begins first placement in accord with SB 2042 policies. Intern meets District contract obligations (additional student teaching may be required).
TED 5382 Field Experience in the Single Subject Classroom B (8 or 10)
Continuation of Single Subject field experience. Student teacher begins second placement in accord with SB 2042 policies. Intern meets District contract obligations (additional student teaching may be required).
TED 5383 Field Experience in the Single Subject Classroom C (10 or 12)
Concluding Single Subject field experience in accord with SB 2042 policies. Intern meets District contract obligations (additional student teaching may be required).

TED 5038 Multicultural Education (4)
Nature of culture, manifestations of culture, cultural contact, cultural diversity in the United States and California. Learning about culturally-diverse students. General principles of culturally-responsive pedagogy.
TED 5110 Computer-Based Technology in the Classroom I (3)
General and specific knowledge and skills appropriate for beginning teachers. Hardware and software terminology, operation, troubleshooting, record management, e-mail, collaborative tools, copyright, privacy, security and safety issues. Relevance for K-12 student learning. Prerequisite: junior standing.
TED 5301 Psychological Foundations in Secondary Education (4)
Principles of learning applied to selection, organization, and teaching of curricular content. Philosophies and trends in education, past and present.
TED 5303 Classroom Management - Secondary (2)
Management approaches emphasizing those promoting positive learning environments which meet the developmental needs of students from varying cultural, linguistic, racial and economic backgrounds. Legal issues which impact upon classroom management.
TED 5305 Social/Cultural Influences (3)
Overview of the history of secondary education in the United States. Analysis of the effect of culture, ethnicity, gender, challenging condition, religious affiliation, and social class on the history of teaching and learning in secondary school classrooms.
TED 5318 Professional Responsibilities (2)
Professional problems. Rights and responsibilities of teachers and students. Self-assessment and self-direction for continuing professional growth.
TED 5320 Teaching Reading in the Content Areas (3)
Develop specific methods and materials for improving reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for all students in the content classroom.
TED 5326 Language and Literacy (2)
Relationship among bilingual education, English language development (ELD), ESL through content, and Specially-Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) in the secondary school. Federal and state laws regarding the education of language minority students.
TED 5329 Single Subject Field Observation (2)
Field experience to include the observation and limited participation in the opening of schools in secondary classrooms.
TED 5370 Second Language Acquisition (3)
Focus on the systems of languages, including phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics as well as theories and factors in first and second language acquisition and development. It also covers psychological, sociocultural, and pedagogical factors which impact on first and second language acquisition.
Field Experience
